about

George Clinton (Parliament/Funkadelic) video message about Dr. Are and this album: www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1NB0B6i99g

As you can imagine, getting the brilliant but reclusive Dr. Jazz together with the aptly named Nine Unknown Men was no easy task and the entire process ended up taking 9 months. We hope you agree with us that the end result made it all worthwhile.

Aspects of the 10 pieces on this album range from traditional jazz to fusion to cool jazz to bebop (including hard-bop and post-bop) to swing (light, heavy, and in between) to honestly whatever we thought sounded good – some classical elements, some rock elements (prog and other), and some quirks and surprises. If we had to choose one style that represented the whole album the closest perhaps is Nu-Jazz defined as: “Music that blends jazz elements with other musical styles, such as funk, soul, electronic dance music, and free improvisation” (or maybe Third Stream which is the fusion of jazz and classical).

We spent beaucoup time literally obsessing over every note of every piece until everyone involved was 100% happy with the results. This attention to detail not only included every pitch, duration, and rhythm but also the exact attack on each note as well as the ornamentation (appoggiatura, mordent, turn, vibrato, whammy bar, glide, bend, and much more.)

released October 16, 2020

First and foremost, we want to thank Dr. Jazz for his time and patience. He sends his salutations to all his fans. Next, of course, our sincerest thanks to the The Nine Unknown Men who did an incredible job performing and recording these pieces and still managed to remain unknown. Please don't flood us with questions as to their true identities, we honestly don't know that ourselves and even if we did we would respect their wishes to remain anonymous.

The pieces on this album utilize the following instrumentation in various combinations and context: flute, saxophones (alto, soprano, tenor), bassoon, clarinet, oboe, trumpet, trombone, violin, viola, cello, string sections, guitar (acoustic & electric), bass (upright, electric, contrabass), piano (electric & upright), marimba, vibraphone, glass harmonica, harp, drums, and percussion (Dr. Jazz's OCD even had him making sure each drum was tuned to his exact specifications including the exact right woodblock pitch when needed).
